Belmar Chase adds Mayor Parisi to Celebrity Chase
BELMAR, NJ (July 22, 2013) – Organizers of the Belmar Chase 5k confirmed today that West Orange Mayor Robert Parisi will represent West Orange among a group of Olympians, Mayors and other community leaders competing in the Barnabas Health Celebrity Chase on August 10th in Belmar, NJ. The Belmar Chase 5k, in its 2nd year, offers a weekend of races for all ages and abilities with a goal of showing people that being active and fit can be fun.
The Barnabas Health Celebrity Chase will feature around a dozen “celebrity” participants looking to win a share of a $7,500 prize purse that will be awarded to recreation departments of participating “celebrities.” The prize purse, provided by Barnabas Health, the state’s largest health care provider is intended to assist recreation departments as they encourage their towns’ resident to be active, fit and healthy.
Handicapped by projected finishing times, the community leaders will get a healthy head start ahead of Olympic track stars with ties to New Jersey. The first community leader or Olympian across the line wins $2,500 for his or her recreation department. The second place finisher receives $1,500 and the 3rd place is awarded $1,000. The remaining participants will divide up the balance of the purse evenly for their recreation departments.
“The recreation department in West Orange offered me my first athletic experiences. In fact, I ran my first race at Colgate Field,” Parisi said.
“We are so pleased to have Mayor Parisi represent West Orange here in Belmar and show, by example, that physical activity is not only good for you…it can be loads of fun as well,” said Race Director Rich Kenah.
The Belmar Chase 5K (3.1 miles) will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Ocean Avenue in Belmar, with prizes awarded to both overall and age-group winners. The Barnabas Health Celebrity Chase portion of the race will begin just before the rest of the runners begin. On the evening of August 9th, the Belmar Kids Chase races will offer sprint races on the beach for children ages 5 to 14 and a free kids’ dash for children ages 2 to 4.
